Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that's why I made works of art. -Felix Gonzalez-Torres

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm 43 years old and I don't know if I will ever know exactly what I want to do when I grow up. I have an amazing support system at home with my husband, kids, friends and family are all incredible. I've done a few crazy things, like in 2007 when John Connor went to Kindergarten I decided I would buy a scrap book store. Then on a whim, I became the social media manager for a salvage store, where that job eventually turned into Creative Director and from that I launched my own jewelry business

Last fall I saw a casting call for an HGTV show. I hadn't really watched the channel in years. I remember the days of Trading Spaces and then my kids got interested in tv and it was always on the Disney Channel. I called Daphney and asked if she wanted to give it a shot and if you know her, she didn't hesitate. We both didn't have a clue what we were getting into, but we use the why not strategy more often than not!

We drove over to Atlanta and met with a cute girl from the casting company that asked us a few questions and told us to come back the next day for a 45 minute on camera interview. Wear something cute, she said. Well, duh, we went straight to Anthropologie in Atlanta and shopped until we dropped! We styled both of our outfits with Lucy's Lockets and walked in there and knocked their socks off! Well, we really didn't know if they liked us or not. If you know us, we thought, why wouldn't they? We were to hear back from them at the beginning of September and didn't. We decided it was for the best and moved on. One week later, we get the call that at the HGTV producers want to meet us….in New York City!! YES! We have been making that trip together for a very long time and would not pass this opportunity up! We hopped on a plane mid-October, me with a fever and Daphney with money in her pockets. I barely remember the 24 hours we were there because my fever was so high. Come to find out, I had a kidney infection. oopsie! I do remember walking in to the room and saying hi to the producers, they got wind that I was sick and we all skipped along quickly. I have no idea what was said in that room that day. I do know that we laughed, we gave them some ideas of how we would stage a house that was going on the market and walking out Daphney had to put 2 advil in my mouth for me. My chills were in full force and I couldn't control the shivering. Needless to say, I went back to the room and crashed while she shopped! Don't worry about me! I'm just going to lay here and die in this random room in NYC and hope the cleaning lady doesn't kick me out!

We should've heard from the producers by Thanksgiving and since we didn't…..we thought we weren't the right candidates for the show and our TV career would have to be made in a different way.

You know the rest of the story….well, you know HGTV's version anyway. We made it. We renovated an amazing beach house and we came in runner up on Beach Flip. We lived through the challenges and are here to prove that you can do anything you want to do. You just have to push through.

I'm in the after math of Beach Flip now and I'm trying to extend that 15 minutes of fame. It's really cool how my jewelry business has picked up and we've gotten a ton of local press. I've been enjoying all of that and now I've been asked to speak to groups, be an emcee for a fashion show and just stand and sign autographs!! None of these things were ever on  my radar. Never on my What-I-Want-to-do-When-I-Grow-up-List. But, what I love most about these opportunities is that I'm scared to death to do them. I don't really know how I'll do speaking in front of a group of people about how to start a small business or telling a crowd of fun people what gorgeous clothes are coming down the runway. I'm going to do them anyway. I'm going to challenge myself, because if I don't, I'll just keep doing things the same way.

We only have one chance to make this life the best we can. I'm having a blast and can't wait to see what's around the corner!
